A Reference-worthy Magazine

The latest edition of Garden Making Magazine is amazing! The Winter 2010/11 issue, Number 4, is titled “The Design Issue” and offers over 20 pages of garden design information. It ought to be a basic reference in every gardener’s bookcase or library [if there are still such things as bookcases or libraries]. Furthermore, the sublime graphic design of this publication gives it a creative freshness that sets it apart from all others in its genre.

A featured section, titled “Demystifying Design’, examines 15 basic elements of wise garden design. Included are the importance of focal points for both large and small gardens, the role that evergreens play in compositions, the need for repetition of both plants and hard elements and the fundamental contributions of both color and texture. This one article summarizes many books-worth of information into pages, it is written succinctly, and the accompanying photo illustrations are dead-on perfect - a rarity in garden magazine publishing.

For those who believe that nothing can replace the excitement of receiving a quality magazine by mail, here are the coordinates: -

I subscribe by mail to this and other publications because I enjoy the surprise of finding something new in my mail box. Receiving gardening magazines by post is a most effective pick-me-up in the depths of winter, when the garden is covered with three feet of snow, and it feels like spring may never come.
